Tester

The tester executes the primary test tasks, i.e. the core of the test process. The test tasks are the most creative, but also the most labour-intensive test activities. In the TMap life cycle model, the function of tester is active from the testability review of the test basis in the Preparation phase through to the preservation of the testware in the Completion phase.

Possible tasks

  • Testability review of the test basis (the specifications)
  • Specification of logical and physical test cases, starting situations and test scripts
  • Creating starting situations
  • Executing test cases (dynamic testing)
  • Checking and assessing test results
  • Executing checks and investigations (static testing)
  • Recording defects
  • Preserving testware.

Required knowledge and competencies

Test-specific
  • Overall knowledge of TMap life cycle
  • Skills in testability review and test design techniques
  • Skills in applying checklists.
Automation
  • General automation knowledge and experience
  • Overall knowledge of system development methods
  • Skills in interpreting the test basis (requirements, functional and technical design)
General
  • Knowledge of the domain and the line organisation
  • The ability to learn using test tools quickly
  • Knowledge of project organisation and a project-based work approach
  • Skills in word-processing and working with spreadsheets
  • Creativity and accuracy.
Other roles

There are also roles that do not constitute positions in themselves. Think about e.g. Defects administrator, Domain knowledge expert, Test infrastructure coordinator or Test team leader. In practice other roles also arise. Roles may also be combined.
